5 Signs Your Child Needs to See a Pediatrician Right Away

Children can’t always tell you what’s wrong, which is why parents in Dhaka often rely on instinct to know when something is off. While minor coughs and colds are a normal part of growing up, certain symptoms mean it’s time to stop waiting and see a pediatrician. Here are five signs that deserve prompt medical attention.

1. High or Persistent Fever

A fever above 100.4°F (38°C) in infants under 3 months should always be evaluated the same day. In older children, a fever that lasts more than 2–3 days, spikes above 104°F (40°C), or comes with a stiff neck, rash, or unusual drowsiness needs prompt attention.

2. Breathing Difficulty

Fast breathing, wheezing, chest retractions (the skin pulling in around the ribs with each breath), or bluish lips are emergency warning signs. Don’t wait for these to improve on their own — go to the emergency department immediately.

3. Signs of Dehydration

Vomiting or diarrhea that prevents your child from keeping fluids down can lead to dehydration quickly, especially in infants. Watch for a dry mouth, no tears when crying, noticeably fewer wet diapers, or unusual lethargy.

4. Unusual Rash or Skin Changes

Most childhood rashes are harmless, but a rash that spreads quickly, doesn’t fade when pressed (a glass test can help check this), or comes with a fever should be examined promptly — it can sometimes signal a more serious infection.

5. Delayed Growth or Developmental Milestones

Not sitting up, walking, or talking within the expected age range doesn’t always mean a problem, but it’s worth discussing with a pediatrician. Early evaluation makes early support possible, which makes a real difference for children who do need it.

Routine Checkups and Vaccination Matter Too

Beyond urgent symptoms, regular well-child visits let your pediatrician track growth, catch issues early, and keep vaccinations on schedule. Farazy Hospital’s Pediatrics team also provides NICU and PICU-level care for newborns and children who need more intensive monitoring.

When It’s an Emergency

  • Difficulty breathing or bluish lips/skin
  • A seizure, or your child is unresponsive
  • A fever in an infant under 3 months old
  • Severe dehydration (no wet diapers for 8+ hours)
  • A head injury with vomiting or confusion

For any of the above, go directly to the emergency department rather than waiting for an appointment.
