Eye health is easy to take for granted — until vision problems start interfering with daily life. Between long screen hours, Dhaka’s dust and pollution, and simply not scheduling regular checkups, many people in Bangladesh delay eye care until a minor issue becomes a serious one. Here are five of the most common eye problems we see at Farazy Hospital, and the warning signs that mean it’s time to book a consultation.
1. Refractive Errors (Blurred Vision)
Nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism are the most common reasons people visit an eye specialist. Frequent headaches, squinting to read signs, or difficulty seeing the whiteboard or television clearly are all signs you may need vision correction.
2. Dry Eye Syndrome
Long hours in air-conditioned offices, extended screen time, and Dhaka’s dusty air all contribute to dry, irritated eyes. Persistent burning, redness, or a gritty feeling that doesn’t improve with rest is worth having checked.
3. Cataracts
Cataracts cause the eye’s natural lens to cloud over time, leading to blurry vision, glare around lights, and colors that look faded. They’re most common after age 50 but can develop earlier due to diabetes or prolonged steroid use. Modern phacoemulsification surgery can restore clear vision with a short recovery time.
4. Conjunctivitis and Eye Infections
Redness, discharge, itching, and swelling are classic signs of conjunctivitis (“pink eye”), which spreads easily, especially among children. Most cases are treatable, but a proper diagnosis matters — viral, bacterial, and allergic conjunctivitis are each treated differently.
5. Glaucoma
Glaucoma damages the optic nerve, usually due to elevated eye pressure, and often has no early symptoms — which is why it’s sometimes called the “silent thief of sight.” Regular eye pressure checks, especially if glaucoma runs in your family, are the only way to catch it before permanent vision loss occurs.
Warning Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore
- Sudden blurred or double vision
- Eye pain or pressure
- Flashes of light or new floaters
- A sudden increase in floaters or a shadow across your vision
- Redness that doesn’t improve in a few days
- Difficulty seeing at night
Any of these symptoms, especially sudden vision changes, warrant a same-day visit rather than waiting.
Eye Care for Children
Children rarely complain about blurry vision — they simply assume everyone sees the way they do. Sitting too close to the TV, frequent eye rubbing, or struggling in school can all be signs of an undiagnosed vision problem. Farazy Hospital’s Eye Care team offers pediatric vision screening as part of our Eye department services.
