What to Expect During an Endoscopy or Colonoscopy

The thought of an endoscopy or colonoscopy can feel daunting. But knowing exactly what to expect makes the experience far less intimidating. This step-by-step guide explains both procedures, what to do to prepare, and the transparent endoscopy cost in Dhaka at Farazy Hospital.

What is an Endoscopy (Upper GI Endoscopy)?

An upper GI endoscopy (also called gastroscopy or OGD — Oesophago-Gastro-Duodenoscopy) uses a thin, flexible tube with a camera to view the esophagus, stomach, and upper small intestine. It diagnoses conditions like acid reflux, gastric ulcers, gastritis, Barrett’s esophagus, and gastric cancer.

What is a Colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy examines the entire large intestine (colon) and rectum using a flexible scope with a camera. It detects polyps, colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and the cause of rectal bleeding or chronic diarrhea.

Before the Procedure: Preparation

For Endoscopy:

  • Fast for at least 6–8 hours before the procedure (no food or water)
  • Inform your doctor of all medications — some need to be paused (especially blood thinners)
  • Arrive 30 minutes before your appointment time

For Colonoscopy:

  • Follow a clear liquid diet the day before (no solid food)
  • Take the prescribed bowel preparation solution (laxative) as directed — usually the evening before
  • Fast completely from midnight before the procedure
  • Arrange for someone to drive you home (sedation is used)

During the Procedure

Both procedures are done under conscious sedation (you’re relaxed but not fully asleep) or light anesthesia. You will not feel pain. The procedure typically takes:

  • Endoscopy: 10–20 minutes
  • Colonoscopy: 20–45 minutes

You may feel mild bloating or pressure — this is normal.

After the Procedure

  • Rest for 1–2 hours in the recovery area until sedation wears off
  • You may feel mild throat soreness (after endoscopy) or bloating (after colonoscopy)
  • Do not drive for the rest of the day
  • Results and biopsy findings (if taken) are usually available within a few days
