Postpartum Care: Recovering After a C-Section

Recovering from a Caesarean section (C-section) is a process that requires patience, proper care, and the right medical support. Understanding what to expect in the days and weeks after surgery will help you heal faster and enjoy this precious time with your newborn. Farazy Hospital’s postnatal care services in Dhaka are designed to support every step of your recovery.

The First 24–48 Hours After C-Section

  • You will remain on IV fluids and a urinary catheter for the first 12–24 hours
  • Pain management is provided via IV or oral medications — don’t hesitate to ask for relief
  • Early movement (sitting up, gentle walks with assistance) is encouraged to prevent blood clots
  • You can start breastfeeding within hours of delivery if you and your baby are stable

First Week: What to Expect

Most mothers stay 3–5 days at the hospital after a C-section. During this time:

  • Your incision will be checked and dressed daily
  • Pain is manageable with paracetamol and anti-inflammatory medications
  • You may experience gas pain, bloating, or constipation — this is normal
  • Avoid stairs and heavy lifting in the first week
  • Your diet should progress from liquids to soft foods to normal within 1–2 days

Weeks 2–6: Gradual Recovery

  • Most mothers can move around comfortably by week 2
  • Avoid driving for at least 4–6 weeks
  • Sexual activity should be avoided for 6 weeks or until cleared by your doctor
  • Gentle walking is the best exercise during this period
  • Watch for signs of infection: fever, increased redness, discharge, or foul smell from the incision

Incision Care at Home

  • Keep the incision clean and dry — pat dry after bathing
  • Avoid submerging the wound in water (no swimming or baths) until fully healed
  • Wear loose, soft clothing — avoid anything that rubs on the scar
  • Report any unusual discharge, increasing pain, or fever immediately

Emotional Recovery

Baby blues (mild mood swings, crying, anxiety) in the first 2 weeks are very common. If feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or disconnection from your baby persist beyond 2 weeks, speak to your doctor — postpartum depression is a medical condition and very treatable.

Your 6-Week Postnatal Checkup

At 6 weeks postpartum, schedule a checkup with your gynecologist at Farazy Hospital. This visit will include incision assessment, uterus involution check, blood pressure monitoring, and a discussion about contraception and future pregnancies.
